Announcement – USC 2021!

It’s that time of year again… After the cancellation of the Unmanned Systems Canada 2020 competition due to COVID-19, the official announcement for Unmanned Systems Canada 2021 has been made. That means things are coming back on track, just in time for the new school year!

Scenario:

“Rapid response times, and the ability to travel routes and distances that are not conveniently accessed by conventional methods, make Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) a promising medical delivery method. Applications of UAS for medical delivery include shuttling biological samples between facilities, delivering medication to the homes and hospital rooms of patients, and reaching individuals in need of life-saving medical attention sooner than by ambulance. The possibilities UAS provide to the future of the health care industry have the potential to save time, resources and lives!”

2020 Student UAV Competition

Ryerson UAV participated in the 12th annual Unmanned Systems Canada UAS Student Competition in Southport, Manitoba from April 30th to May 2nd.

The 2019 USC competition scenario is all about drone delivery. UAVs and UGVs are used to autonomously deliver medical goods across short and long distances for healthcare facilities. Phase 1 of the competition consists of a design report, while Phase 2 is the operational flying demonstration conducted in Southport, Manitoba.

A total of 16 teams from across Canada participated in phase 1 of the competition. Unfortunately, the second phase of the competition was postponed to May of 2021 due to COVID-19.

2019 Student UAV Competition

Ryerson UAV participated in the 11th annual Unmanned Systems Canada UAS Student Competition in Alma, Quebec from May 1st to 3rd.

The 2019 USC competition scenario was a solar farm surveillance scenario where drones could be used to automatically inspect the health of arrays of solar panels. Phase 1 of the competition consists of a design report, while Phase 2 is the operational flying demonstration conducted in Alma, Quebec.

A total of 16 teams from across Canada participated in phase 1 of the competition, while only 14 teams participated in phase 2 of the competition.

2018 Student UAV Competition

Ryerson UAV participated in the 10th annual Unmanned Systems Canada UAS Student Competition in Southport, Manitoba from May 4th to 6th.

The 2018 USC competition scenario was an RCMP surveillance mission where drones could be used for reconnaissance of a criminal area before officers entered the site. Phase 1 of the competition consists of a design report, while Phase 2 is the operational flying demonstration conducted in Southport, Manitoba. A total of 14 teams from across Canada participated in both phases of the competition. We were very pleased to receive the spirit award for the second phase of the competition.

2017 Student UAV Competition

Ryerson’s UAV team participated in the 9th Annual Unmanned Systems Canada UAS Student Competition in Alma, QC from April 28th to April 30th.

Phase 1 of the competition consists of a design report, while Phase 2 is the operational flying demonstration conducted in Quebec. For more details on the competition scenario, visit here.

A total of 16 teams from across Canada participated in Phase 1 of the competition. We were very pleased to received an Honourable Mention for the first phase of the competition.

However,  only 13 teams were present in Alma for their flying demonstrations. Out of 13 teams, Ryerson UAV placed 2nd. This was a huge accomplishment for our team, being only the second time participating in the Phase 2 portion of the competition! We are extremely excited to expand our horizons further and see where our team can go to next!

Just Announced!

It’s that time of year again… The UAS Student Competition scenario is out! That means getting some new recruits and doing some major brainstorming for this year’s UAVs!

2017 Scenario:

“The use of UAS for wildlife monitoring is becoming commonplace particularly in Canada’s vast remote landscape. This year’s real life scenario will do just that.  Each team is a “company” hired to use their UAS  in support  of wildlife research personnel. They will be asked to locate and census nests of three different types of geese in the remote Canadian wilderness.  In addition, nesting samples are required to test for pesticides in the environment by retrieving eggs from the nests of birds under study. A written report on the findings is also submitted to the judges.”

Goodbye Summer. Hello School.

This summer absolutely flew by!

Frosh has arrived and that means EngExpo! We had a great turn out at our booth this year, lots of curious minds that we can’t wait to get to know throughout the year. However, we haven’t just been working on recruitment this summer.. We have made some advancements to our ground control station!

First of all, we’ve made a portable ground control station that has FPV footage built-in. Having FPV footage allows for easier probe delivery during competition, and also gives the pilot a better idea of the plane’s location (most of the time we fly our UAVs at high altitudes and a significant distance away).

Additionally, we have also built an antenna tracker that can track the UAVs during their flights. The antenna tracker is an amazing addition to our ground control station. This device actually follows an airplane in flight to keep a directional antenna locked on target. This allows you to greatly increase your range without having to ever aim your antenna.

2016 Student UAV Competition

Ryerson’s UAV team participated in the 8th Annual Unmanned Systems Canada UAS Student Competition in Southport, MB from April 29th to May 1st.

Phase 1 of the competition consists of a design report, while Phase 2 is the operational flying demonstration conducted in Manitoba. For more details on the competition scenario, visit here.

A total of 18 teams from across Canada participated in Phase 1 of the competition. However,  only 15 teams were represented in Southport for their flying demonstrations. Out of 15 teams, Ryerson UAV placed 9th. Since this was our first competition for the team we were very pleased with our placing and can not wait until we return next year.
